MAKING INDIA A GLOBAL HUB FOR SHIP BUILDING INDUSTRY – MARCHING TOWARDS $5 TRILLION ECONOMY

Ship Building:
Future Trends and Technologies

Industrial Development is carried out by utilizing several Technologies. In the Ship Manufacturing Sector, myriad changes to control Environmental Pollution persist . In the years to come, Eco[1]nomically Equipped Smart Ships and Several Vessels would be seen. As we already are aware, Industry 4.0 has made several changes in the Manufacturing Sector. Going as per the Commercial Market Requirements, Shipbuilding is evolving to meet these requirements. The Industrial Sector is being digitized. As of now, Ship Manufacturing is paving a path for Technological Revolution. Not surprisingly, advanced materials are utilized to manufacture ships or vessels. Augmented reality and Robotics, however, are utilized to manufacture various kinds of vessels. These revolutions then, will be useful to control Environmental changes.

$5 Trillion Economy &
Ship Building Indian perspective

Admiral Karambir Singh, Ex-Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy, said that there is enough headroom in the Mercantile Marine Sector for India to attain the critical mass and become a hub for Defence Shipbuilding. Speaking at the ‘International Seminar on Nation Building through Shipbuilding’, organised by FICCI, Admi[1]ral Singh stressed that Shipbuilding can contribute immensely to the vision of making India a $5 trillion economy by 2024. “As India’s Shipbuilding Industry matures, there is immense potential to forge Strategic Partnerships and convert India into a hub for Defence Shipbuilding Exports and Repairs to friendly Foreign Countries.” How[1]ever, to enable the strategic outcomes, there is an emergent need for the nation to achieve a certain criti[1]cal mass in Indigenous Ship Production and Repair Capability. While Defence Shipbuilding plays an undenying role, we subsequently need to harness the headroom available in sectors such as Mercantile Marine and Coastal Shipping to increase capacities and attain our true potential. Dwelling on Indian Navy’s Shipbuilding Initiatives and its linkage to Nation Building, the Navy was fully invested in encouraging the Indigenous Shipbuilding Ecosystem for 50 years and so, Make in India became a National Mission. More than 60% of the Naval Budget is dedicated to Capital Expenditure and nearly 70% of this Capital Budget has been spent on Indigenous Sourcing Amounting to nearly Rs 66,000 crore in the last five years. Since the launch of Make in India in 2014, 80% of the AoNs (Acceptance of Necessity) on cost basis have been awarded to Indian Vendors. Of the total 51 ships and submarines on order at Various Shipyards as on date, 49 are being constructed indigenously,” he noted. Nearly, 90% of ship repair by value is undertaken by Indian Vendors and mostly MSMEs, implying that in addition to the Capital Budget, a high proportion of Navy’s Revenue Budget is being ploughed back into the Economy

Ship Building and India:
Make in India Perspective

India is a country with a rich Maritime Tradition spanning over 4,000 years. This Maritime Tradition is deeply imbued in the psyche of our Coastal Population and manifests itself in their customs and practices. The Indus Valley Civilisation was known to use boats and sail ships around 3000 BC. This art of Manufacturing Boats started to fade when the Mughals invaded our country. Moreover, they could never be revived. For a country that is predominantly peninsular in nature with a coastline of 7516.5 km and 1197 islands, India’s Shipbuilding Capabilities have not kept pace with its Economic Development, Market Demand and Human Resource Potential. So, there is an utmost need for the above to be addressed expeditiously, to ensure our Economic Potential and National Security are not impacted. The Indian Shipbuilding Industry mainly centres on 27 shipyards comprising eight Public and 19 Private Sector Shipyards. Furthermore, it is significant to understand that Shipbuilding is complex and has many players and variables. Building a Ship starts with fabricating the Ship’s hull in a dry dock or a launch way and outfitting it with various Equipment and Systems in outfitting basins. It requires around 300-400 types of Raw Materials and Equipment, which vary based on the type of ship. In respect to cost, the value of all the Raw Material and Equipment would be around 60-70 per cent of the total cost of the vessel. A Ship[1]builder then, must procure these Raw Materials and Equipment from various Industries. Therefore, a Ship[1]yard is a crucial enabler for Ancillary/Small Industries
